Embark on the adventure... of electricity with the new exhibitions
at the EDF Electropolis Museum!
Invisible, indispensable, in...tangible, electricity is the everyday companion of our days and our nights. And yet, how mysterious it remains!
Discover the XXth century, electrical century

Since the renovation of 2001, permanent exhibition areas invite you to relive the adventure of electricity from Antiquity to the XIXth century on a joumey rich in all sorts ofemotions, one that will create in you and your family or friends a passion for electricity

Since June 2003, the museum invites you to discover 1500 sq.m. of permanent exhibitions covering the XIXth century's conquest of electricity.

The EDF Electropolis Museum is involved in a complete renewal of its exhibitions with the support of its partners:

  • The Ministry of Culture - Regional cultural affairs department (DRAC) - Alsace
  • The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
  • The Alsace Region
  • The Département of Haut-Rhin
  • The City ofMulhouse

The Electricité de France Group

The objective ? To offer an exploration at once amusing, instructive and striking of one of the most fascinating scientific and technological subjects there is - and whose history is closely linked to that of Muihouse, since a certain Zénobe Gramme presented his revolutionary dynamo here in person. But could we make accessible what is, we have to admit, such complex material?

How could we be sure that families, tourists, our youngsters and their teachers would find here something to wonder at, be inquisitive about and that would make them want to finds out more?

How to make the best of the artwork and objects in the EDF Electropolis Museum's collection, which are as beautiful to Iook at as they are full of remarkable educational potential?

In short, how could we give ail kinds of people, whatever their age and background, access to knowledge with as much pleasure as emotion ? Quite a challenge, to which would rise with energy and in close cooperation, the EDF Electropolis Museum team, two Canadian firms, Plani-Museum (museological design and programming) and GSM Design (museographic design), and the Mulhouse architects, Alter Ego.

The concept they settled upon, is based on a notion that is both essential to the project and gives it its structure. Is the discovery of electricity not an extraordinary human adventure ? Let's tell the story then of this adventure through a chronological journey - that will allow even the smallest hands to grasp the thread oftime. And since the XXIst century possesses a sparkling range of media, why limit ourselves to telling that story with words that create images and images that are worth a thousand words. Let's use decors inspired by each age. Let's use objects that deserve to be brought out of the stores and exhibited. Let's play with technologies able to convey the excitement of discovery, enable the visitor to touch (without danger) the power of the mysterious diseharges, and even bring back to life the key personalities in this fine story...

Thus a museographic presentation has come together that evokes the eras and content explored, means of interpretation are combined that will surprise the visitor and constantly renew his experience: scale models enriched with sound and light effects, a multi-sensory show, interactive hands-on exhibits, dialogues and accounts of historical personalities, live demonstrations, period atmospheres, pictures, books and oversized newspapers, great (true !) stories featuring great adventurers, surprising images, explanatory diagrams... and ail this in French, German and English.
